Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace. Hyphenated words like well-known count as one word. Numbers and punctuation attached to words are included in the word they belong to.
How are sentences counted?
Sentences are counted by detecting terminal punctuation — full stops, exclamation marks and question marks followed by whitespace or end of text. The count is an approximation and may differ slightly for texts with unusual punctuation.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?
Both. The output includes a character count with all spaces included, and a separate count with spaces excluded, so you can use whichever is relevant for your purpose.
