About Word Counter

Writing to a word limit, checking an essay length, verifying a character count for a form field or analysing imported content all require accurate text statistics. This tool gives you an instant breakdown of word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count and paragraph count for any text you paste — no installation, no account, processed entirely in your browser.

How to use Word Counter

Paste your text into the input box and click Run. The output shows word count, total character count, character count excluding spaces, sentence count and paragraph count — each on a separate line for easy reading. The result updates every time you click Run.

When to use this tool

Use this when writing to a word limit for an essay, job application, grant proposal or article submission. Also useful for checking SMS character limits (160 characters), social media post lengths, verifying content against CMS field limits or analysing the length and structure of imported text.

Privacy

All processing happens locally in your browser. Your text is never uploaded or stored anywhere. You can safely count words in confidential drafts, client documents and sensitive content.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace. Hyphenated words like well-known count as one word. Numbers and punctuation directly attached to a word are included in that word's count.

How are sentences counted?

Sentences are identified by terminal punctuation — full stops, exclamation marks and question marks followed by whitespace or end of text. The count is a close approximation; unusual punctuation patterns may produce slightly different results.

What is the difference between the two character counts?

The first count includes every character, including spaces. The second count excludes all space characters. Some platforms and forms use one definition or the other, so both are shown.

How are paragraphs counted?

Paragraphs are counted as blocks of text separated by one or more blank lines. A paragraph of a single sentence counts as one paragraph.

Is there a text size limit?

No. The tool processes text of any length entirely in your browser with no server-side restrictions.
